This paper explores the experiences of seven teacher educators who met monthly over one academic year to engage in a collaborative self-study focused on exploring the text, Developing a Pedagogy of Teacher Education: Understanding Teaching and Learning about Teaching. The authors' experiences demonstrate how self-study research, undertaken within the context of a professional learning community engaged in book-study. Their experiences hold the potential to enhance teacher educators’ understandings, foster collaboration, and provide a catalyst for meaningful observations about their practices, students, and teacher education program. The authors highlight that this has altered some of their practices and their discourse with others.

This research examines the critical friendship of two doctoral students charged with teaching a methods course in elementary social studies. The primary result of this critical friendship was the overall pedagogical, affective, and intellectual support the friendship provided. The authors argue that their critical friendship is evidence that novice teacher educators can engage collaboratively in meaningful work to uncover the complexities of teacher education within the confines of academic and professional schedules that often pull doctoral students and new faculty in a number of competing directions. They argue that the results of this self-study point directly to the support needed for novice teacher educators to become effective teacher educators.

In this study, the first author deploys autoethnographic self-study to intentionally and systematically examine her practice. Specifically, she was interested in investigating how her background as a Black immigrant educator as well as a multilingual communicator affected her practice with predominantly White monolingual prospective teachers. Findings revealed that the author's practice reflected three elements of multicultural awareness as displayed by her attention to individual predispositions, cultural practices and personal stereotypes. From this study, prospective teachers are better able to understand the ways in which language, culture, and diversity intersect in the backgrounds of foreign-trained literacy instructors.

The current paper reports a self-study of multicultural identities in a public high school ethnic studies class and a university multicultural education course in Hawai‘i, a unique multicultural setting in which no ethnic group is in the majority. Three important findings emerged. First, a personal-constructivist-collaborative approach to self-study in an intellectually safe classroom environment provides both students and teachers with a context for challenging their socially constructed assumptions about race, culture, and ethnicity. The second major theme to come out of the data analysis describes how the students’ stories became transformational teaching texts. Third, self-study is a multicultural pedagogy that promotes social perspective taking, tolerance, and understanding of diversity through personal transformation.

This work had two purposes. First, the authors wanted to organize an experience for the preservice teachers in which they would engage in inquiry into their own practice. Second, as teacher educators, they hoped to learn about their own practices and the ways they encourage an inquiry stance during student teaching. The authors conclude that introducing self-study to preservice teachers can be a way to encourage deeper understandings of practice and critique-oriented reflective experience that emerged from the data collection, analysis, and collaboration processes. The experience promoted collegial talk among groups and prompted questions about practice that reframed experiences.

This paper documents a self-study on the authors' actions-in-practice in a peer mentoring project. The investigation involved an iterative process to improve their knowledge as teacher educators, reflective practitioners, and researchers. The authors conclude that they present their analysis of competing pedagogical tensions that were overlooked and consequently led to a less than meaningful learning experience. Recognizing and appreciating the tensions and their impacts required reflecting on their individual actions through dialogue and shared writing. The author's use of metaphors also helped them to investigate what they were each thinking and feeling.

In the self-study reported here, the aim was to acquire a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that teacher educators and student teachers encounter while working with, and learning about, ICT as a tool for learning. This learning interest focused on both the practical aspects highlighted during the course and the more theoretical perspectives of knowledge and learning that emerge when technological aspects and tools are included in the process of teaching, learning, and assessing. One of the learning interests of this self-study was to analyze how the authors elaborated and developed their understanding of the theoretical framework of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK).

The purpose of this article is to use self-study methodology to uncover what effects these experiences had on the development of the author's pedagogy of teacher education and so he needed to find a way to extract ideas that were relevant to his practice as a teacher educator. The author draws two conclusions from this self-study (1) There is considerable value in re-experiencing oneself as a learner by examining one’s own life history in order to challenge how we know what we know about teaching. (2) If we accept the idea that prior experiences as a student and as a teacher influence our work as teacher educators and professors of education, then our prior experiences as a learner in non-formal settings offer a rich context for additional analysis through self-study.

This collaborative self-study examines the notion of writing reflectively in teacher education, and documents how student teachers in Canada and the Netherlands respond to their teacher educators’ reflective journals. The authors conclude that participating in such a study helped them to: engender a sense of teaching about teaching that goes beyond the simple delivery of ideas, information and theories about teaching and helps to create a bridge into the world of learning through experience.

This paper aims to documenting self-study processes and findings of a collaborative research group that examined a professional development school (PDS) partnership. This study revealed the complexity of the PDS relationship and the tensions and dilemmas associated with it. It revealed that experiential disparity existed within and among faculty and students in various PDS sites as a result of poor communication as well as divergent models of collaboration and philosophical goals between faculty and mentor teachers. Disparity in the learning experiences among the preservice teachers was attributed to the quality and scope of the partnership. This study helped the participants realize that they were engaged in an innovation and like all innovations, people struggle together naturally until a true solution to the problems is found.
