On becoming a teacher educator
This article explores how the changes in teacher education in Australia have influenced teacher educators' identity as a professional group. This paper is based on the observations and experiences of the author, who has been teacher educator for the past two decades. The author concludes that the challenge now is for teacher educators to raise their profile in the academy by positively addressing the endemic uncertainty of knowledge of practice through an explication of their pedagogy of teacher education.
An Integrated Research Course Sequence: Empowering Teacher Candidates to Become Researchers in their Classrooms
In this paper, the author examines an attempt to empower teacher candidates to become researchers in their own classrooms through an integrated research course sequence in the Masters of Arts in teaching program at Quinnipiac University. The author identified four recurring themes that shed light on some of the strengths and weaknesses of the research course sequence at Quinnipiac.
Educate, Equip, Engage, Empower: A Framework for Preparing Preservice Teachers in Civic Education
This article presents a theoretical framework for citizenship education grounded in historical, philosophical, theoretical, and practical experience foundations. This '4E framework' for citizenship education provides a way for educators to actualize goals for civic empowerment with their students. The 4E model proposes a four-part process for student learning: educate, equip, engage, and empower.
We're All in this Together: Collaborative Professional Development with Student Teaching Supervisors
The current article describes a collaborative professional development experience with student teaching supervisors. The participants were 98 preservice teachers and 16 early childhood supervisors from early childhood teacher education program at a large, public university in the southeastern United States. The findings reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the project. The findings offered some suggestions to improve the collaborative professional development. The authors conclude with the recommendation that university-based personnel must understand the complexity of school-based supervision and work to find ways to foster more collaborative and supportive relationships with supervisors.
Exploring the Characteristics of ‘Teachers for Excellence’: Teachers’ Own Perceptions
This paper aims to identify teacher characteristics which could describe excellent teachers in Scotland. The concept described as ‘teachers for excellence’. Eighty-eight teachers responded to a questionnaire which asked them to rate in importance 44 characteristics of excellent teachers. The findings of this study reveal that teachers saw teaching as an interaction between practitioners and pupils. The findings of this study reveal that teachers saw teaching as an interaction between practitioners and pupils. The teachers consistently described excellence in terms of personal qualities and interpersonal skills.
