Becoming Teacher Educators: An Innovative Approach to Teacher Educator Preparation
This article describes an initiative, Becoming Teacher Educators (BTE). BTE is a community specifically designed for doctoral students whose career goal is to become teacher educators. The findings reveal a very high level of satisfaction from the members of BTE. Members frequently commented that the ongoing support from the community was the reason that they continued to learn, grow and share. In addition, the BTE community has provided members with additional educational and professional opportunities outside the basic requirements of their graduate programmes.
Child-Centered Classroom Management
The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of a classroom-based child-centered elementary classroom management approach and compare and contrast a teacher-led approach using a vignette. The authors conclude that the benefits of child-centered classroom management include reducing classroom disruptions, child emotional distress, teacher stress, and facilitating development of positive relationships between teachers and students.
The Mentoring Relationship as a Complex Adaptive System: Finding a Model for Our Experience
This paper is the outcome of the authors' reflection and personal experience of mentoring, and they offer it to the field in the hope it stimulates discussion about re-conceptualizing and modeling the mentoring relationship. The authors conclude that the traditional and reciprocal models fail to acknowledge the dynamic relationship between mentor and protégé and the impact of external factors on the dyad. A CAS model, on the other hand, allows for a complex, dynamic, unpredictable, and nonlinear conceptualization of mentoring. It also is particularly useful because of its inclusion of context. Hence, the authors feel a holistic lens like CAS offers a better understanding of the mentoring process.
Forming a Teacher Educator Identity: Uncertain Standards, Practice and Relationships
In this article, the author drew on his professional and personal history to explore some of the prominent features that have shaped his own teacher educator identity. The author concludes that despite the uncertain conditions for the development of professional identity in the field of teacher education, his relationships with his colleagues and his students have shaped his identity as teacher educator.
Jumpstarting Novice Teachers’ Ability to Analyze Classroom Video: Affordances of an Online Workshop
Teaching teachers how to conduct an observation is a vital step in the analysis of teaching that perhaps is often skipped. To address this gap in teacher preparation, the researchers developed an online workshop for teacher trainees. Data collected from teacher candidates’ observation worksheets and responses to open-ended questions after each of the three online modules indicated that they were able to see, code, and describe the behavior that they were being directed to observe. Therefore, the results showed that this training led to an increased awareness of the teacher’s actions in terms of how they related to or created student involvement.
