Effects of Teacher Induction on Beginning Teachers' Teaching: A Critical Review of the Literature
The study explores the effects of induction into beginning teachers' ideas and practice of teaching. Three approaches to understanding the effect are: the assumed effects based on theoretical assumptions, the analysis of the effects through teachers' reports, and effects of using multiple data sources.
Teachers' perceptions of what was most (and least) supportive during their first year of teaching
The article described a study using mail-in surveys regarding the most and least supportive element of mentoring. Among teachers who were mentored, the experience was the most supportive. Colleagues and administrative support were identified as the most supportive for teachers who were not mentored. Both groups cited similar least supportive factors. Both cited administration, training, and lack of materials.
Stages of collaboration and the realities of professional learning communities
Conflicts arising in learning communities are the subject of the study. An analysis of a small group of teachers over a 2-year period was conducted. Data gathered included journal entries, focus-group discussions and individual interviews. Weick's (1979) four developmental stages of collaboration provide a broader understanding of why conflict occurs in learning communities and its effect on collaborative learning.
Using Supported Video Exemplars for the Professional Development of Preservice Elementary School Teachers
The study describes the use of video episodes in elementary mathematics classrooms. The focus of this study was to investigate the benefits of supporting software to enhance preservice teachers' understanding of teaching mathematics.
Action Research in Education: Addressing Gaps in Ethical Principles and Practices
The article reviews potential ethical problems associated with action research in K-12 classrooms, and the difficulties action researchers encounter with policies and procedures of institutional review boards. The authors provide recommendations for future practice for the schools, review boards, and teacher educators.
Pre-service teachers’ defensive pessimism in situ: Two case studies within a mathematics classroom
The article examines mathematics pre-service teachers' defensive pessimism. Two case analyses are provided and both studies examine the anxiety, self-esteem, expectations, self regulation and self-handicapping of the teachers. Teachers are encouraged to support defensive pessimism learning strategies, such as perseverance and the use of multiple representation.
Teacher education programmes delivered at a distance: An examination of distance student perceptions
The article discusses technological innovations and their effect on education. Specifically, the writers focus on distance education in general and teacher education in particular. The study revealed differing perceptions between male and female students as far as course structure, student/teacher interaction, overall satisfaction and peer interaction. The study offers recommendations for distance education courses worldwide.
