Supporting Teachers' Development of Cultural Competence Through Teacher Research
In this paper, the authors describe how teachers, who enrolled in an advanced master's degree program, expanded their understanding of multicultural education through teacher research. The authors address to the following question: In what ways does 'a graduate-level course with a dual emphasis on culture and inquiry through teacher research affect how in-service teachers conceptualize culture in their educational settings? The authors found that when most teachers had the opportunity to consider a broad view of culture and then apply it to their professional contexts, their understandings of teaching and learning in the classroom was enhanced.
Developing an Educational Performance Indicator for New Millennium Learners
The purpose of this study was to identify critical factors expected in new-millennium learners (NMLs) competencies to prepare for their future and to construct an indicator of educational performance with valid and reliable criteria. The researchers developed the measurement of educational performance for NMLs on the basis of previous research and theoretical background. The researchers also conducted a meeting of experts, pilot studies, and a nationwide survey to define and refine a concept of educational performance required by a knowledge society.
Measuring the Mathematical Quality of Instruction: Learning Mathematics for Teaching Project
In this article, the authors report on a conceptual framework developed for identifying and analyzing mathematical features of classroom work. The authors describe their method, including how the authors synthesized the literature on mathematics instruction in classrooms and how they developed their coding scheme. Next, the authors share their conceptualization of the mathematical quality of instruction (MQI) by providing coding guidelines for particular constructs and by illustrating the application of specific codes to two example lessons.
Learning (Not) to Become a Teacher: A Qualitative Analysis of the Job Entrance Issue
In this article, the authors examine how experiences during teacher education affect student teachers’ decision on job entrance. The authors examined case studies of 12 student teachers: six student teachers who indicated a major increase in intention to enter teaching and six who indicated a major decrease. The data revealed that guidance, support, follow-up, and feedback on field experiences are crucial determinants of student teachers who indicated a major shift in their intention for job entrance.
Intensive Mentoring that Contributes to Change in Beginning Elementary Teachers’ Learning to Lead Classroom Discussions
In this article, the authors examined whether intensive mentoring program that is devoted to a specific and important aspect of teaching can have an effect on classroom practice. The authors compared between two groups of beginning teachers.The results show that teachers in the district treatment group improved as compared to a similar group of beginning teachers in the district who did not participate in the treatment.
A Comparative Analysis of Teacher Education Students' Views About Citizenship Education
This study focused on the views of middle and secondary teacher education students from various content areas. The author interviewed 77 teacher education candidates from mathematics, English, science, and social studies education. The author concludes that citizenship preparation can show how subject area issues and citizenship preparation can be used as ways to examine content and take action on domestic or international issues.
