Choosing teachers: Exploring agency and structure in the distribution of newly qualified teachers
The paper offers a theory regarding the pattern of distribution of new teachers into the teaching field, and its effect on disadvantaged learners. The study follows two beginning teachers and examines the strategies that place them in particular schools and the reasons for their relocation following their first year of teaching.
Communicating Feedback in Teaching Practice Supervision in a Learning-Oriented Field Experience Assessment Framework
The communication of feedback in post-observation conferences is the topic of this article. 32 pairs of mentors and participants of in-service teacher education programs participated, and interviews were analyzed. Findings revealed four major themes, related to distribution of content; communicating learning-oriented assessments; learner participation in judging performance and learner participation in target setting.
An Alternative Conception of Mentor–Novice Relationships: Learning to Teach in Reform-Minded Ways as a Context
The article examines mentor-novice relationships, based on critical constructivist and social cultural perspectives. Teacher educators developed 16 types of mentor-novice relationships and demonstrate some of relationships as well as their consequences on reform minded teaching.
A Research Model for the Study of Science Teachers’ PCK and Improving Teacher Education
The study aims to clarify the Fachdidaktik tradition, and proposes a new model for pedagogical content knowledge. The model offers an integrative approach to the study of content knowledge for science teachers.
Challenges to University Autonomy in Initial Teacher Education Programmes: The Cases of England, Manitoba and British Columbia
The focus of this article is on the preservice teacher education programs that are designed and carried our by universities, and the accreditation and certification that is managed by state and professional organizations. The article reviews challenges to teacher education in England and Canada.
Developing Pedagogical Technology Integration Content Knowledge in Preservice Teachers: A Case Study Approach
This research examined the effects of case-based instructional strategies on the development of Pedagogical Technology Integration Content Knowledge (PTICK) in alternative teacher preparation students. The study was part of the Crossroads Project funded by the Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers for Using Technology (PT3) grant from the United States Department of Education.
